Chapter 15

Mix It Up

Emma

It has been days since I told Adam that I liked him and opened up to him about my parents. I expected him to run off, but he has been really sweet since. Work has been great as well. I seem to have gotten the gist of working at the club and I am proud of myself. There have been no complaints from customers, I have been working well and interacting well with my fellow colleagues, and even the manager has commended me for a job well done. I have no pending bills or rent money, and I am just about to finish paying off my parents’ debts. I never imagined I could ever get this close to living stress-free.

On the other hand, I have tried to open myself up a little bit and I have been hanging out with Adam time and time again but only just as friends. He took a step back after our intense talk the other day and I feel a sense of relief in a way because this gives me time to make an elaborate decision of whether or not I will be able to handle the pressure of being in a relationship with my boss. It also gives me ample time to assess who he is as a person as I get to know him better every day. At the club from time to time, he’d come to the counter, and we’d talk for a while when it’s not as busy, and more often than not, you’d find us laughing our socks off. Other times after work, Adam would offer to just give me a ride home.

One time, he booked the entire bowling alley on my free day. He even let me tag my sister along. I had never bowled before, so he had to teach me how to hold the ball. On my first attempt, I fell flat on my face and broke a nail. The first few times, I couldn’t hit any pins for the life of me as the ball kept going into the gutters. Other times, I’d just lose my stance altogether, sending the ball flying into a different lane entirely. Tessa seemed to have had the experience and was quite the pro. However, because I can be very competitive and quick to learn, after a few failed attempts, I quickly grasped the concept of the game and even hit a strike. I was so engulfed in the excitement that I broke out in a victory dance that lasted some minutes too long. What snapped me out of it was the giggles and laughter from Tessa and Adam. I was so embarrassed I could feel the heat rising on my face and so I chuckled awkwardly as I walked towards them. We then sat for a long while just downing pizzas and sodas, cracking jokes, and telling stories.

At another time, after the end of my shift at the club, Adam took me out to an ice-skating rink.
